12 Volt Inverters

12 volt Inverters are still the standard for many off-grid or grid-tied home Inverters. There is simply so much more choice than many other Inverters that are available, although they are in much more limited quantities. 12 v Inverters are the standard as this is the voltage that so many solar panels output. Deciding to install a home power system will see many of us looking at the myriad of different Inverters available and simply wondering which one is the best suited to our needs.

My home power setup consists of the following:

  • A 12 Volt Inverter. A Pure Sine Power Inverter

  • Six 2 volt Deep cycle Batteries storing 560 ah or amp hours

  • Four 80 Watt high quality Solar Panels

  • A Back-up Generator

This system can run our household for much of the year. We live in a country with a lot of sunshine and this enables us to get by with a fairly minimal system. The panels do a fantastic job of gathering the Suns rays and turning it in to stored DC Energy in our bank of batteries.

We limit the amount of appliances we use in the house. We only use an electrical toaster in the Summer time as they put a very high drain on the batteries. Added to this we run a Fridge that is powered by Gas and use a Laptop not a Tower system. Laptops use much less electricity and you have the advantage of being able to work off battery power when it has charged up. Anyone looking to install a similar system will do well to note that you will need to be very careful about power consumption but our 12 volt Inverter does a fabulous job of turning the DC current to a very stable AC current. 12 v Inverters are still by far the cheapest Inverters to purchase. The fact is they are produced in higher quantities which keeps the price relatively low. Very low compared to only four years ago when I purchased mine.

Home Inverters are a fantastic invention and without them we would be very limited as to what we could realistically run in our houses. A Pure Sine Power Inverter that is 12v can easily run a household. Ours is 1300 Watts and if I had to purchase again I would definitely purchase an Inverter that had a much higher output. 1300 watts really is not that much when you consider that even a basic electric Kettle will need something like 2000 watts plus just to function. Electric ovens are not an option either and as for washing machines they need much more than our Inverter will allow.

When choosing a 12 volt Inverter I would always recommend that a 12 v Inverter with the highest number possible of Watts at your disposal is chosen. Look carefully for a Pure Sine Power Inverter Review and choose carefully. If you pick a quality product it will be in use for years. Get an Inverter that will give you as many watts as possible.

Nowadays there is also the option of purchasing an Inverter that is much higher than 12 volts. There are now more and more 24 volt Inverters and 48 volt Inverters are making steady increases in to the market. A 48 v Inverter will be more expensive but it will have many advantages, not least the fact that you will have a significantly higher number of Watts to draw from at your disposal. The price, however will be reflected in this.

Cheap Inverters are now the norm and I am very pleased about this. Only a few years ago Home Inverters were so expensive that it stopped many people from installing home power systems. Now the Inverter, 12 volt Inverter or otherwise is not seen as the most expensive part of a home Solar system. In fact a 12v Inverter is now probably one of the cheaper components of an off-grid system.

Whatever Inverter you do purchase, if it is for the home then a Pure Sine Power Inverter would be my choice every time. Technology has come a long way and Inverters are improving all the time but a steady current that can run even the most delicate of electrical equipment is still a prime consideration.

Home Inverters are very simple to wire. There really is very little to it. There is an awful ot of money to be saved if you can do some of the installation yourself. For an off grid system it is even easier as you have no power grid connection to contend with, wish makes the installation much safer. Consisting of little more than a few wires to be connected from a bank of batteries there is not much to it at all. If you feel competent enough then installing your own 12 volt Inverter is certainly a viable option for most to tackle.

The Best 12 Volt Inverter?

There are simply too many brands now to recommend only one. I would look at the Inverter reviews via the link at the top of the page, choose your voltage of the Inverter and go with some of the top recommendations. 2500 watt Inverters are a very popular choice and can serve a household very well indeed. This number of watts means that you can run many home appliances easily although you may have to limit the number of items running simultaneously.

Whichever of the many home Inverters you choose 12 volt Inverters are still the best choice for many.
